In the middle of July I took a trip to Dinosaur National Monument. Just another treasure when it comes to the National Park Service. Being fully aware that the Dinosaur Quarry Visitors Center was closed, I didn’t see any dinosaur bones. Yet the geological formations were so stunning that I still enjoyed the trip. Dinosaur spans the border of Colorado and Utah and on each side there is a nice automobile tour. Each tour has an accompany pamphlet and at .50 cents apiece they are well worth it.
I choose to camp at the Green River Campground which, as the name implies, is along the Green River. It struck me while I was there that this is the river that John Wesley Powel started his epic journey down the Colorado River. The river was raging as are most of the rivers around the nation are today. I don’t know if it’s named the Green because of the color of the water or the way that the landscaped changes from the desert to a lush green valley. Probably both.
As a note, the route I choose to get there was to take CO 14 to CO 40. I specifically chose this route because it closely parallels the Cache la Poudre, Yampa and Green Rivers. They were all flowing well.
My take on this park is that it’s a must see and I will return. From the petroglyphs to the geology, Josie Bassett Morris’ cabin and the wonderful Green River, this is a nice park
