One of the interesting facts about the Lewis and Clark expedition is that only one member of the crew died and it was later diagnosed as a burst appendix. This would be Charles Floyd who was one of the first people to join the expedition and was also related to William Clark. On Monday, August 20, 1804 Sergeant Floyd passed away and was buried on a bluff, next to the Missouri River. This bluff today is named Floyd’s Bluff.
Floyd’s Bluff is located south of Sioux City IA, and is within the city limits. The sight is perched along the Missouri with a four sided obelisk with plaques discussing Sergeant Floyd and the Louisiana Purchase. On the west side of the monument is a little path leading down to a sitting area which also has a flagstaff waving an American Flag with 15 stars on it. This is a period flag represent the 15 states that were part of the Union in 1804.
